Reading is not the only way to gain knowledge of the work in the past. There is another large reservoir (知识库) which may be called experience, and the college student will find that every craftsman (工匠) has something he can teach and will generally teach gladly to any college student who does not look down upon them . The information from them differs from that in textbooks and papers chiefly in that its theoretical (理论的) part --- the explanations of why things happen --- is frequently quite fantastic (神奇的). But the demonstration (示范) and report of what happens, and how it happens are correct even if the reports are in completely unscientific terms (术语). Presently the college student will learn, in this case also, what to accept and what to reject. One important thing for a college student to remember is that if Aristotle could talk to the fisherman, so can he.

Another source of knowledge is the vast store of traditional (传统的) practices handed down from father to son , or mother to daughter, of old country customs (习惯), of folklore (风俗). All this is very difficult for a college student to examine, for much knowledge and personal experience is needed here to separate good plants from wild grass. The college student should learn to realize and remember how much of real value science has found in this wide, confused wilderness and how often scientific discoveries of what had existed in this area long age.

In Cardiff I was put to work in furniture department at one of the local stores. It was large, fairly out of date, run ( 经营 ), like its parent company in London, by a group of relatives. Being only a member of the store for a short time, I was in a very fortunate position. The others, particularly the older members of the store, were naturally asked to produce good sales figures. I was more of an observer. If I made a sale, I was pleased, but if I didn't, I would not be blamed. I was really there to observe and learn, and as I had no interest in making a position in the furniture business, I wasn't too diligent (勤奋) about that either.

One salesman in late middle age once expressed his insecurity (不安全感) by scolding me of trying to steal one of his customers (雇客). Nothing could have been further from the truth, but he demanded that I go to the stockroom (货仓) with him to settle the matter. He was very small and thin, but to my surprise he started dancing about among the carpets and closets working his arms wildly and calling on me to 'put them up'. I couldn't put anything up ---I was too busy rolling on a four-foot six - inch spring mattress (弹簧垫子) , helpless with laughter. Stage plays, at first, seem a lot like films. Both use actors and dialogue and scenery. But if you try to make a film by setting up a camera in front of the stage, you will find it won’t work. A film made in this way will leave the audience cold. And even worse you’ll be wasting a powerful tool --- the camera.

A stage is actually a box. One side of the box has been removed so the audience can see what’s going on inside. The actors remain at a fixed audience. In the film, however, the camera can bring the audience up close and fix their attention on small but important things: a frightened look, a whisper, a trembling of hands.

The camera offers the film maker freedom allowing him to move easily across barriers(界限) of time and space. He can show his action in real cities and on real farms. He can also use the camera to change the scene dozens of times in one film. No expert of the stage can do this.

31. The main idea of the text is that ___C_____.

A. stage plays and films are two different kinds of art

B. it is always disappointing to turn play into films

C. films have certain advantages(长处) over stage plays

D. the camera has made film making easy and possible

Water on the earth is being continuously recycled in a process known as the hydrologic cycle(水循环). The first step of the cycle is the evaporation (蒸发) of water in the oceans. Evaporation is the process of water turning into vapor, which then forms clouds in the sky. The second step is the water returning to the earth in the form of precipitation (降水):eitheras rain, snow or ice. When the water reaches the earth's surface, it runs off into the rivers, lakes, and the ocean, where the cycle begins again.

Not all water, however, stays on the surface of the earth in the hydrologic cycle. Some of it seeps (渗入)slowly into the ground through infiltration (渗透) and collects under the earth's surface as groundwater. This groundwater is extremely important to life on earth since 95 % of the earth's water is in the oceans, and is too salty for human beings or plants. Of the 5 % on land, only 0.05 % is above ground in rivers or lakes. The rest is underground water. This underground water is plentiful and dependable, as it doesn't depend on seasonal rain or snow. It is the major source of water for many cities. But as the population increases and the need for water also increases, the groundwater in some areas is getting dangerously low.

Added to this problem is an increasing amount of pollution that seeps into the groundwater through infiltration. In the future, with an increasing population and more toxic (有毒的) waste, the hydrologic cycle we depend on could become dangerously unbalanced.

35. The supply of groundwater is getting low because of ____D_____.
